Relationship Advice: Will My First Love and I Be a Couple Again?

I have been reunited with my first love and we have been in touch through lunch, emails, and voicemails for the last four years. We are both currently married. I want to know if we will ever be sexually passionate again and be a couple as we once were? I truly believe he is my twin soul mate.

Once a soul mate, always a soul mate. It’s very normal to harbor feelings for our first love, so don’t feel guilty about it! As for him being your twin soul, I’d have to know more, but the way it sounds, it looks to me that he might be one of your companion soul mates.

Companion soul mates are just as special as your twin soul, so even if he does not turn out to be your twin soul, he was and still is a very important part of your life. As for as being the couple you once were, that is highly unlikely because the couple you once were has gone through a lot of life lessons and with that, growing pains, and the two of you have become entirely different persons you once were. While the feelings can be stirred and the passions reignited, the road you both are on now is completely different. You both have married, and I’m taking it that if you and he feel that there is a need to reunite, there are problems within both your marriages that must be solved. If they cannot be solved, it’s time to move on. Whether that includes you two becoming one again, it would depend on the factors involved. Because the spirits of the two of you are fighting to be rejoined, the reality of it is that it’s not that simple. The first thing you need to do is decide whether breaking up your marriage is worth it.

If the marriage has problems that can be resolved, my first instinct is to tell you to at least try to work it out because you don’t want to make a big mistake. I’ve heard of cases where two soul mates who are in marriages meet and decide to leave their spouses for their new soul mate only to find they wish they had at least tried to resolve whatever problems there were in the marriage because, in reality, they still loved them. Thus, they found themselves in the soul mate triangle, and even more problems surfaced because of it.

If the problems cannot be resolved, then there’s your cue. But, unless you want to find yourself in a three-way soul mate relationship which has its own set of problems, I’d try to tie up loose ends by looking inside your marriage and seeing what you think the problem might be. If there is a communication problem, encourage your spouse to talk to you about it. If there are drugs, alcohol, or abuse-related issues, my advice to you would be to pack up your bags because it’s only going to get worse without any outside help.

With that said, there is no harm in communicating with your previous soul mate because there is a strong reason why he has resurfaced, and I’m figuring it is because your spirit is crying out for help concerning whatever it is that is going on in your marriage. He has been called to help you with this. Don’t look at it as an opportunity to escape. Look at it as a golden opportunity to find out in which direction you need to go. Listen to your inner self. Your inner self will tell you what you need to do and where you need to go.

January is National Breakup Month

If it wasn’t enough to have January being one of the coldest, if not dreariest, months of the year, they had to go and dub it the month more couples break up than any other month of the year.

Six out of ten couples will break up this month. Sounds awful, doesn’t it?

I never cared much for January anyway. After-Christmas bills are piling in, it’s too cold to enjoy most outdoor sports (or the ones I like anyway), and everything looks so bare and dreary. No wonder this is the month for the most breakups.

But, other than that, why is it that January beats out the others?

Here’s my educated guess. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.

Something clicks in people’s heads that if they plan on getting out, they better do it now before it’s too late. When Valentine’s Day hits, they surely want to be with someone they love, or they don’t want to break their once-loved one’s heart on the most romantic day of the year so they do it now.

Another reason why it might be that January brings forth more breakups than any other month could be that the new year signals new beginnings. It is a time when people step back and reflect on the previous year, and if there are changes to be made, this is the time to do it.

Unfortunate for some, these changes include a reevaluation of their love life.

If a relationship isn’t working, and can’t be fixed, a breakup is inevitable. The Dear John or Dear Janet letter goes out, and that’s if they even bother to tell them at all. Believe me, from what I hear, some choose to just vanish from the scene of the crime without any warning, the dirty scumbags that they are.

So, what happens if you’re the dumpee?

After you’ve mourned the loss of your relationship, turn the other cheek and try to learn what it is you were supposed to learn from the relationship. Every relationship is a learning lesson in humility, courage and stamina. Other lessons will be learned, but those are enough in itself.

If you keep in mind that every single person who comes into your life from here on out on a soul mate basis does so for a reason, it helps you to see why it is that people are there in the first place. Some are not meant to be long-term. In fact, some just come into your life to help you with a particular situation, and they are gone. More than likely, most of them left in January, according to statistics, but even though they are gone in the flesh, their spirit will linger forever.

The reason for this is that when two soul mates meet in the first place, it is one spirit calling to another. The one spirit recognizes the other spirit from a previous life perhaps, but whatever the case, there is instant recognition.

That recognition, that spiritual connection, will never go away even if the breakup ends on less than amicable terms.

This may or may not be what you want to hear, but from a professional stand-point, this is what happens.

So, if you happen to be one of the statistics this year, and you become the victim of a breakup, remember that there was a reason for the two of you to come together in the first place. Figure out what it was that you learned from it, and go on from there.

Breaking up is certainly hard to do because nothing hurts worse than the pain of the heart.

Even though it seems a callous thing on the part of your boyfriend/girlfriend, think of it as a favor. To extend a bad relationship would be detrimental to your well-being. Things would only escalate, and who knows what might happen.

There is a distinct plan for you, and this certain person was only meant to come into your life to teach you something, or you teach him, so find ways to look on this as a learning experience. You’ll come out ahead in the long run and it will only empower you for the next relationship.

And just think of how nice the next one will be because you have learned a valuable lesson that will give you more strength and power than you had before.

With each relationship, you grow stronger and more confident in what does and does not make you happy. Before long, you will find the one who is supposed to be with you on a long term basis.

Meanwhile, pick up the pieces, learn what it is you are supposed to learn from this relationship, and move on into a better life and a better world of pure, soul mate love.

Advice With a Heart

You know, one of the worse things in my life as a soul mate relationship coach is having to tell people what they don't want to hear. I want to bring out that magic wand and do whatever it takes to have things happen they way they want it to happen. These people open up their hearts to me. I'm sure sometimes I'm their last resort, and I try to put this aside and answer from a professional point of view.

But, unfortunately, I also have a heart.

I try not to let this hamper my decision, for I know they are looking for expert advice, and I try to give it to them like it is, but I still pick up on their emotions, their anguish, their hopelessness.

This makes it really hard.

I am an empath, and this is one of the ways I am able to help people. As I am reading their letters, I can get inside their emotions, and I use this to help me give advice...with a heart.

I was reading a free newspaper the other day, and on the second page was a relationship column written by a local, and someone I didn't know.

Of course, being as she wrote in my field, I read her column, and all the while, trying to figure out how I would approach the same question.

I was just simply aghast at her answer.

The question was, "I am in love with a married man. Can you tell me what I should do?"

The so-called relationship columnist proceeded to berate her for even thinking such a thing. No words of wisdom. No help. Just her opinion on what an awful person she was, and basically grinding her spirit to the ground.

Before I read her answer, I knew what my answer would be. I knew that, unfortunately, some of our soul mates come into our lives at the wrong time. There are reasons for it, and either parties should not feel ashamed for what has happened. They should feel ashamed if they acted upon it, but not for the feelings they have for one another.

For, you see, the soul mate relationship is a whole different thing. Yes, it's about relationships, but you have to take a different approach. There are no society standards and no right or wrong moral issues, no matter what anyone says. It's on a different realm, and that realm is of a spiritual nature, and doesn't even enter into today's thinking of what is right and wrong.

It's often hard for people to perceive this. And this is why I'm here.

The soul mate world does not run by society's standards, nor are they governed by some narcissistic know-it-all with the diploma that states they have that right to tell people what they feel is right or wrong.

The soul mate world has to be interpreted through a medium that does not involve anything other than that deep understanding, and that spiritual communication that involves insight and intuitiveness. But, more than that, it involves knowing the way the soul mate relationship works. And no diploma will give you that.

You either have it, or you don't.

If you do have it, it's the most wonderful thing in the world because it gives you the power to look underneath the exterior, and delve into the interior where the true soul mate core lies.

I felt I had to get this message out because there are so many so-called "experts" out there that are doing more harm than good. Don't berate a person for something they either don't understand, or can't control. Help them. Show them the way out, so that they can go, "Okay, I understand that. Now, I can do something about it." Lead them back in the right direction, but don't make them feel that they are worthless because of something they had no control over.

And this is what the wonderful world of soul mates is really all about.

Why are Psychics Clueless About Predicting Who Your Soul Mates Are?

When I was a little itty-bitty girl, the one thing that really fascinated me about carnivals was the fortune teller booth. As I'd walk by with my hands full of cotton candy, I'd try to sneak a peak into the cracked door of the tent to see just what it was the fortune teller was doing in there.

Was she hiding behind a crystal ball, and giving fallacies, or was she actually in there telling the future? The price was reasonable, so if you felt you were dupped, you laughed about it.

On a message board today, I was reading someone's post about how clueless some psychics were at predicting your twin soul. Their reasoning was that if one psychic told them one thing, and another something completely different, and yet neither one was correct, what was going on here? Can you or can't you predict who someone's twin soul was?

The answer is you can't. No psychic in the world can tell you who your twin soul (or any soul mate) is, but they can give you their gut "feelings" or "visions" on the matter.

Some of these feelings or visions might be somewhat on track, and yet, others way off track.

So, how can we trust a psychic to tell us the truth?

I am a spatial clairsentient, which basically means I can see images from afar. When I have friends, or clients, on Instant Messenger, I pick up on things. We'll be right in the middle of the conversation, and I'll ask them if they're wearing pink sandals. Nine times out of ten, I'm right, or close.

These images pop up out of nowhere, but it all has to do with your psychic abilities to pick up on these things.

I am not a psychic; yet I do possess an intuitiveness and an insight, and a gift of seeing things that are not in front of me. This helps tremendously in my coaching others on the subject of soul mates.

And, the crazy thing about it, is I can't force it. The images, or feelings, has to come to me naturally.

When psychics use their "crystal ball" at a carnival for instance, they're forcing it. And they end up guessing most times.

But, if you want to really know who your twin soul is, all you have to do is learn to do it the way I do it. By listening to your intuition.

We all possess intuition. We all have the ability to feel if something is right, or not.

But the one thing I explain to people about the twin soul relationship is that it's that spiritual feeling you feel deep inside with that person that determines who your twin soul is. In more times than not, it's not a sexual feeling. It's a feeling deep inside of you that goes right to your gut.

Think of it like this. It's your spirit communicating with your twin soul spirit, unbeknownst to you.

It might sound a little New Agey, but that's putting it in a nutshell.

So, the next time you feel a spiritual connection with someone, give them another glance.

It could be your twin soul.

Can You Reverse Soul Mate Energy?

Q: I understand that when soulmates meet very often one may pick up on the connection whilst the other dosn't or goes into denial. I've heard that the energy connection can be put into the spiritual reverse so the other mate gets more interactive. How would you encourage this spiritual reverse of the energies?

A: The first thing you need to look into is why it is that one soul mate feels the spiritual connection, but the other doesn’t. That is your key. I feel that when the love isn’t reciprocated, the one who is backing off is the one who has not come to terms with him or herself. In other words, there is still some baggage that the other is not letting go of which is preventing them from opening up their heart and feeling this soul mate energy. I feel that they do feel it, but for one reason or another, and because they still have some karma within themselves to work out, they put up a block. In most cases, they are putting up that block because of past hurts, although there are zillions of other reasons such as maybe they need space to find out who they are before they begin another relationship.

To reverse the energy connection would be to find a way to knock down that block, of course. I really don’t believe we have that power to do so because we are not that person and we have not gone through the same experiences they have that caused the block. Sure, we can be sympathetic and try all we can to help that person see it our way, but it’s not going to happen until it’s time for it to happen.

I have found that timing plays a huge part in whether soul mates are meant to be together at a particular time in history. I also feel that our life’s paths were already mapped out before we were born, so it wouldn’t be following either one’s life path to MAKE it happen and would, basically, screw up the scheme of things.

There was an interesting story I read about a man who believed he could turn a woman he had never met into his soul mate. He made the news and everything. Promoted the heck out of it.

The story goes he found the woman with whom he planned on doing this on an airplane. She balked at first, but then relented. Leaving her family and the life she once knew behind, she joined him and they began their relationship. It bombed eventually and she flew back to her homeland citing the relationship was more like an experiment, which it basically was, and didn’t feel natural.

I found the man’s email address and emailed him, telling him that soul mates cannot be “made,” and instead had to be born into it.

He didn’t take kindly to it and I suppose he was embarrassed the whole thing bombed.

In essence, I don’t believe that you can reverse the soul mate energies. If the timing isn’t right at this particular time, perhaps it will be right further down the road. You just can’t force the soul mate relationship. Let it happen on its own accord. It stands a better chance at succeeding.

Have You Found Your Twin Soul?

I had an interesting email come in this morning from a young man who found himself in an awkward position. He was about to get married, but lo and behold, someone stepped into his life and the connection was so strong, he just had to write to me and ask what I thought about it.

I get questions all the time from those seeking answers to their perplexing soul mate questions, but the ones that really intrigue me are the ones that have had their twin souls enter their life, only they didn't know it.

I love explaining what the twin soul relationship is all about because I feel that this third group of soul mates (karmic and companion being the other two) is so interesting. There is so much more involved in this relationship than any other relationship out there.

A couple days I had a woman who I syndicate my articles to ask me about twin souls. And these are only two examples. There are millions of people out there that are looking for their twin soul, yet they have yet to find them (or so they think) and they want to know the secret.

The secret is held in my book,
How to Find and Keep Your Soul Mate (I know, shameless plug), but I will say this much: everyone has a twin soul, just like everyone has karmic and companion soul mates, but they all come into your life on a different level.

The first thing you will notice is that spiritual connection. If the spiritual connection is not present (and you will know it), then it's not your twin soul. And, in a lot of cases I have seen, you will already be in a committed relationship when he/she enters your life. Makes for a complicated situation, don't you think?

Can we be in love with two people at the same time? Sure, we can. We're only human. But, the thing is, both persons are in your life for separate reasons. You will find that one person fulfills a need you have, while the other fills another.

I was in a committed relationship when I met my twin soul. Yes, I felt that spiritual connection, but never acted upon it or acknowledged it because I was with someone else. In time, the connection surfaced to a point where it was time to face up to what was happening. I didn't want to hurt my "companion" soul mate, but I couldn't ignore what was to be my twin soul, either.

In time, I knew that it was meant for me to say with my companion soul mate and I let my twin soul go. He ended up dying of a broken heart two weeks later.

Not all twin soul relationships happen that tragically, but it's an example of how strong the pull is. Hurting of the heart is one of the most painful hurts one can ever experience, as we all have been through it and know.

But, the point is, you can love more than one person at one time, just on different levels. I'm curious, have you met your twin soul when you were already in a relationship and you chose to stay in your relationship? Or did you find the strength to forgo your present relationship and be with your twin soul?

COLUMN: Is He My Soul Mate - Or Not?

Defining the soul mate relationship as opposed to any other kind of relationship is not so hard once you understand what soul mates are all about. So few people really know how to go about doing this, but it’s not as difficult as it seems.

I had a client not too long ago tell me that she had been with a man for a long time and that she was positive she was totally in love with him—and not lust love—and that she didn’t know how to tell if he was her soul mate and if he felt the same. She wanted to know how she could tell, which is one of the more common questions I hear.

“I’m in love, but is it the real thing?”

The real thing. Just what is the real thing and how can you tell?

First of all, if you are in love with someone, he/she is your soul mate, but just as there are varying degrees of love, there are varying kinds of soul mates. It sounded to me like in this woman’s case, it was the companion soul mate to whom she was referring.

All companion soul mates, unless they choose not to for various reasons, involve intimacy on different levels. The other two kinds of soul mates—karmic soul mates and twin souls—rarely involve sexual relations. Hard to believe, but it’s true.

As with all companion soul mates, these people come into your life for a particular reason. Is it for marriage? Is it to produce offspring?

Only you can determine that as the relationship gets further along, but one thing is for sure: he or she is meant to be a part of your life. No two soul mates come together without a purpose. That is how you can differentiate acquaintances you meet in your daily life from people with whom you share a soul mate bond.

If you are in love, you are in love. You feel it, it makes you happy and fulfilled and you want to spend the rest of your life with this person. A natural thing to happen to two people who are soul mates.

However, if further down the road, the two soul mates should part because of differences, that soul mate was still meant to come into your life.

When two people come together as soul mates, there is a purpose for them to do so; but when that purpose has been realized as well as finalized, the two may part but that is not because they weren’t meant to be a part of each other’s lives.

It is because their mission together on earth has been accomplished.

Can We Love From Afar?

Q: I have a question regarding a person in my life I believe is my true soul mate. We met nearly 2 years ago and our coonection was more complete that any either of us had experienced before. I have never been married, am the mother of a 14 year old son. When we met he was going thru a very nasty divorce. We were together and then for reasons due to his employment, he is a consultant, we have been apart. He is in Hyderabad since 10/04. We have kept in touch via email and have seen each other twice since he left. We both feel as if we are soul mates and openly share these emotions but I desire so much for him to be back in my life in a physical presence. I guess I am wondering how does one sustain loving so much from so far away and why did it happen to begin with? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, your question is quite common. How do you sustain a relationship from afar and why did it happen in the first place?

I believe that this person who came into your life did so for a very important reason. The vibes are there...everything seems to be in synch, so why is it that he cannot be in my life physically and how do I get through this without losing my everloving mind?

Well, the secret is this. You and this man have touched on a spiritual level. You've already made physical contact, and that's a good start because the instant you meet is when you feel the spiritual connection. If it's not there at the beginning, it's not the true soul mate bond.

So, let's just say that the spiritual connection is in place. What do you do now?

The best advice I can give you is not to obsess.

Get involved in things you like to do or you're going to get yourself into a state that is not compatible with the soul mate experience. In other words, be happy within your present life.

By not obsessing over this, you'll accomplish two things.

One, you'll be doing something productive and this can only be positive towards your self-fulfillment, happiness and self-growth (no matter how old you are, you're still growing mentally).

And two, the soul mate in question will look to you in better light. Sure, he probably knows that he's missed, as you and he are on that same spiritual realm, but he will see a strong woman; a woman who can withstand being apart from him.

What will happen is that his psyche is going to do two things.

He's going to see you as someone who can withstand the pressures of life and can hold up her own end when faced with a challenge.

And, two, he's going to try even harder to find a way to be with you because he's not the subject of ALL your interests as you have become a productive, busy and happy woman.

See how that works?

Now, in time, if it's meant to be, it will happen. If everything is in place, both your and his psyches are in the right frame of mind and both of you are leading productive and happy lives on each of your ends, only positive results can occur.

However, if it does not happen, you have to look at why it is that caused the block. Is it out of your hands? Can he not come home because he is employed so far away and it's not possible?

Or, does the spiritual connection exist over time and space and bring two lovers who are meant to be in each other's lives together?

I've had many people ask me questions about the soul mate experience, but I'd like to take the time now to answer those questions that people ask me about how I became involved in the first place. This will be an ongoing series here in which I will answer whatever questions you have for me and hope that it will help you understand why I'm on this mission. Q: How do you know so much about soul mates?

A: Insight. An incredible amount of insight. I think that when one experiences things in life to the point where it becomes so much a part of their life, they pick up on some incredible information which evolves from this experience. I don’t know any other way of explaining it. It’s a gift and one in which I want to share and, hopefully, save a few people from making earth-shattering mistakes not only in their relationships, but in their own personal lives, too.

Q: Have you always believed in soul mates?

A: I was like most people out there, unsure if what I was experiencing was the real thing. I believed that there was someone out there and that person would be my knight in shining armor. Boy, was I wrong. I made many mistakes, but it’s those mistakes which I have learned from and today, I have found my companion soul mate and am very happy. But, if my twin soul hadn’t entered my life years ago, I would never have become enlightened to what the twin soul experience is all about and it’s not what most people think it is.

Q: You speak of having a companion soul mate, but then a twin soul. Aren't they one and the same?

A: A companion soul mate is different from your twin soul. They are but two of the three kinds of soul mates that enter your life. The karmic soul mate is the third.

In my life, they are two different people, but yet they are two different people that were meant to come into my life. Between them both, they have given me incredible insight on what the soul mate experience is all about so I can share it with you.

Q: Where is your twin soul now?

A: My twin soul died in 2001, the same week the terrorists attacked New York City and Washington, D.C. Mixed emotions that week, for sure. He was the inspiration for my latest book, Romancing the Soul.

Q: What do you think people think the soul mate relationship is all about and how is this different from your own views?

A: In my experience, most people think that there is only one out there for you and that person is the one who you marry. While this is true in some cases, what about those soul mates out there that you don’t marry? We can’t sweep them under the rug like they don’t exist, can we? I believe that we have many soul mates and each one has a purpose in our lives. Some we have deep friendship with, some we marry and some are just special people who make impacts on our lives.

Q: How would you describe a soul mate?

A: A soul mate is someone very special who comes into your life to give it new meaning. Their appearance isn’t coincidental. Timing plays a huge factor in when a certain soul mate shows up. It just depends on which road in life you are on.

Q: Do you think we all have soul mates?

A: Of course! That’s what my book, Romancing the Soul, is all about – exploiting the myths and making people realize that everyone has a soul mate.

Q: What do you say to people who feel frustrated that they haven’t met their soul mate yet?

A: I tell them to not worry about it. If you actively pursue a “soul mate,” it’s only because you feel a void in your life. Accept happiness into your life by doing things for yourself – things that make you happy. If you want someone to love you, become the person someone would want to love and the only way you can do that is to love yourself first.

Childhood Sweethearts

Childhood sweethearts – that first time we feel the stirrings of romantic feelings – is a magical time in which pangs of heart-felt emotions touches us in a way that we’ll remember the rest of our lives and will shape our future in the romance department. Where boyfriends or girlfriends come and go as we grow up and eventually have families of our own, it’s that childhood sweetheart that we remember most. It’s something about our first real young love that we recall with fond memories because it is the first love that was genuine and bittersweet. Our heart is but a virgin organ until our childhood sweetheart walks into our life and changes our lives forever. It is that first love that we carry with us throughout life, never forgetting those sweet moments of innocence. They leave with us a legacy that time cannot erase.

Everyone remembers their first kiss and the first time they had intimate, physical relations, but do you remember your first childhood sweetheart where there were no pressures on either side? Why is it that this one sweetheart is unforgettable of all the other relationships you’ll ever have?

As we get older and fall in and out of love, it’s that one soul mate, that first soul mate – whether you are seven or seventy-seven – that introduces you to what it feels like to be in love. The reason why it is so memorable and so magical is that this is the time when you love someone outside of the family circle and it stirs emotions that are new to you, yet oh-so-wonderful. While it leaves you with many confused feelings because it is your first, it makes you feel alive like never before.

Just like any other kind of soul mate, our childhood sweetheart will, in time, leave us to embark on their own life journey, but they leave with us an urge to experience that same feeling with someone else again. It is that first experience with love that gets the ball rolling in a quest to recapture that exhilirous feeling of having someone love you and you giving love in return.As a child growing up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and then in Burbank, California, I was painfully shy. If a boy were to so much as say hi to me, I’d run. However, I found that boys didn’t want anything to do with girls at this stage so the most contact I had with them was trying to beat them up for different, odd-like things that boys of a young age do.

Also, there was a stigma associated with having a boy like you and that you’d get a bad case of cooties and would have to spend the rest of your life in bed which was something close to called “the kiss of death.”

When I entered into the fourth grade, I still had this mindset that boys were to be avoided, but there was one boy who stood out from the rest. His name was Bruce (his last name escapes me). Bruce and I attended Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Burbank, California, in the early sixties. The face escapes me, but it wasn’t so much as physical looks, but what he was as a “person” that made me rethink the cootie theory.

Bruce was well liked by everyone. I don’t recall why, but I do remember that he had this unmistakable charisma that made you want to respond to his “hi” if the situation warranted it, even as red-faced as you were.

One day, the class was playing some kind of game where you take your fist and hit the ball against this backboard and the opposing team member did the same. They might have called it handball; I’m not sure.

I was terrible at sports. But, Bruce let me win that round that day.

The feeling that gave me is so hard to put into words. I knew that he could have beaten me hands tied behind his back, but he let me win. It was that very day that confirmed that Bruce and I were soul mates. He was the first boy in my whole short life who wanted to see me do something great and feel good about myself and that stuck with me the rest of my life.

I never found out what happened to Bruce, yet every now and then, I’d get this urge to see if I could find him. Internet searches turned up not much as I didn’t have a last name to go by, yet I’ve always had this urge to want to contact him. Why? I’m not even sure, except maybe to thank him for showing me a side of the opposite sex that was quite surprising, even for a nine-year-old.

Another reason I think he holds a candle to my heart could be that he was a part of my past – a part of my past I will never be able to capture except in my memories. And it is that past that people want to hold on to as it’s part of their history – part of them that shows them who they were at one time and, although our past has a lot to do with who we are today, they can never relive.

We can’t go backwards in time, but it’s those small things about our past that stand out more than the rest. It is our childhood sweethearts that we hold a special place in our heart and which shapes our future relationships in more ways than you’ll ever realize.

Is He My Soul Mate - Or Not?

Q: I have been with this guy for a long time now and I am positive that I am totally in love with him – not just lust love – and I don’t know how to tell if he is my soul mate and if he feels the same. How can I tell?

A: This is one of the most common questions that people ask me. I'm in love; but is it the real thing?

First of all, if you are in love with this person, he is your soul mate. Just as there are varying degrees of love, there are varying kinds of soul mates. Sounds to me like the companion soul mate relationship since you mention lust, too. All companion soul mates, unless they choose not to for various reasons, involve intimacy and/or love-making. This sounds to me like something beautiful you share with someone and I commend you on that!

Second, as with all companion soul mates, he has come into your life for a reason. Is it marriage? Is it to produce offspring? Who knows, but one thing is for sure, he is meant to be a part of your life. No two soul mates come together without a purpose. That would be silly, wouldn't it? That's how you can differentiate acquaintances from people with whom you share a soul mate bond.

Now if, for example, for some ungodly reason, you two should part because of differences further down the road and then you come back to me and say, "Dorothy! How could you tell me a year ago (or so) that he was my soul mate when I never want to see his face again???"

Let's hope that does not happen to you, but it does happen.

Is it Love or Lust?

Q: Can some karmic relationships be romantic?

A: I have found that when karmic relationships become romantic, it is only to fulfill a physical need and possibly even an emotional need. If the person who comes into your life on a soul mate basis, but is purely to teach you something about yourself or you teach them, once that “need” is fulfilled, the two will part and go on to new relationships.

The karmic soul mate relationship is rarely sexual or romantic in nature, but if there is something to be learned or desired, it can happen and does happen. The relationship with this person, however, becomes a confused one. It’s a big difference between love and lust and lust is usually the reason “romance” is often misinterpreted for having a “need” fulfilled.

If you are in a karmic relationship and you know that that’s what it is and nothing more, do not confuse love with lust or you may end up more confused in the long run. Accept the relationship for what it is, but keep in mind the reasons why this relationship is not taken to the next level.
There will be signs as to why this is not taken to the next level such as commitment on one of the other’s part. Without the commitment, this relationship is definitely a karmic relationship and is meant to teach you something about yourself. Perhaps you are longing for a relationship and will settle for less and that’s what this is. However, this person is meant to come into your life for a reason. Figure it out, and then learn from it. Meanwhile, keep in mind that there will be someone out there for you to give you what you need with the commitment. You have to be patient and that’s the problem with most people. They look at a relationship as the real thing when they know in their heart, it’s not. Above all, don’t rush into anything without giving it your utmost thought. While karmic partners are necessary in your self-growth, they are not there to give you the intimacy you desire.

COLUMN: The Three Stages of Mending a Broken Heart

You’ve been dumped. Short of throwing yourself off the nearest bridge, you resort to hiding in your bed for days, comforted only by the fact that at least you have a year’s supply of Moonpies by your bedside and your answering machine is on the alert in the hopeful case that your once loved one might call and beg to have you back.

Only, that call never comes and that box of Moonpies? It’s a constant reminder that the emptier it gets, the more bloated you are. But, you don’t care. You wish the earth would open you up and swallow you whole. Sound familiar?

Cases like this happens everyday.

Falling in love has its risks and you’ve just experienced it first hand. You want your life back but don’t know the first thing about how to get out of that black cloud that hovers over you, or even finding the energy to do it.

What do you do?

Acknowledge the fact that you have to go through three different stages during a break-up. Once you realize this, you can chart your progress and see that it’s only a short trip to recovery.

STAGE ONE – The Hurting Stage

Symptoms: This is the hurting stage. It’s where you are now. It’s your heart’s way of telling you that you have just experienced the worse kind of hurt there is. You cry, you’re depressed and you have no idea how you are going to live without him/her. You leave messages on his answering machine and text him to the point where you are becoming psycho. You drive by his house in the wee early morning to see if his vehicle is still at his house or he is – gulp – off with another woman. You drive by where he works and contemplate going in and crying your eyeballs out to let him know this has hurt you beyond repair. You either eat tremendous amounts of comfort food or you don’t eat at all and your health suffers. You cry on your co-worker’s shoulders and hope they can help you get out of this mess. You are, essentially, gone and a hopeless mess.

How to cope: Now more than ever would be a good time to hang out with friends and watch a few comedies, even though you just aren’t up to it. Rekindle family relationships. Talk to older family members about how they met their husbands/wives and how they coped with troubled relationships. Gain insight from them. Try to remember things that brought you happiness. Was it a bike ride through the countryside? A trip to the beach even in the cold of winter just to watch the waves lap against the shore? How about that closet that is in desperate need of rearranging/cleaning/sorting? Now is the time to focus on you.

You have to acknowledge that this is the normal process of grieving a relationship that has died. Nothing can really help at this point because as with the death of a loved one, this is the same feeling. It’s a natural process. Give it time and remember that soon you will enter the second stage.

THE SECOND STAGE – The Getting Even Stage

Symptoms: Remarkably, when your heart begins to heal, your hurt turns to anger. What nerve he/she had to dump me! You vow you’re going to make his/her life a living hell as long as you are alive. You start dating. Only, these are rebounds. Rebound relationships most times happen in this second stage. Some last, but most do not for the simple reason that you will do anything in your power to inflict pain on the one who did it to you.

How to cope: Once you get to this stage, you’re halfway there. Even though anger is not a healthy feeling to have, it is a normal reaction after you’ve gotten over the feeling of hurt. However, instead of going postal and risk the chance you may do something you’ll regret later, take his/her picture and throw darts at it. Burn love letters. Finalize the break-up by getting rid of everything you have of his/hers. But keep in mind that years from now, you’ll wish you did have some kind of remembrance of the relationship because it’s all part of your life history. Whatever you do keep, look at it as a symbol of how well you did cope and can look at the relationship as a learning experience.

STAGE THREE – The Not Giving a Damn Stage

Symptoms: You wake up one morning and ask yourself what you saw in this person in the first place. Nothing he/she does now bothers you. In fact, you are happy he/she has left because you are ready now to form new relationships, new loves.

How to Cope: You are there. When you hit this last stage, you have finally come to the point where you can go on from here and form new relationships. Relationships that aren’t rebound. When you finally get to this last stage, you will become the person you once were – full of happiness, hope and a quest for life.

Once you realize the three stages of a break-up, it helps you to understand the process that is involved. Just as it took time to fall in love, you don’t just fall out of it overnight.

It helps to remember that there will always be a tomorrow and that there is always that second chance to find that special person who is meant to share his/her life with you. Life is full of second, third and even more chances. So, pick up your heart, go through the process to heal and chalk it all up to experience. You’ll be glad you did. In the words of an unknown author, “Never forget what is worth remembering or remember what is best forgotten.”

Is My Fiance "The One"?

Q: Hi Dorothy- I'm engaged and have been often finding myself questioning about "the one", if he is it and how i feel given that i have had stronger connections with other men and I feel I may be missing something, but I love my fiance immensely. It has left me very confused and tired. It just helps to get another perspective on "soul mates" and "the one".

A: I think what you are doing is going through the normal stage of having pre-marital jitters. Before you tie the knot, you're naturally going to want to make 100% sure that you're making the right decision. For one thing, if you feel you love your fiance and that the only problem lies in the fact that you have these strong connections with these other men, I'd say that the impending marriage was in good shape.

"The One" is often misconceived. It's a shame to give up on something beautiful that you could have with your fiance because he might not be "The One." The truth is, there is no "The One." However, there are many soul mates out there that will come into your life that fulfill your different needs. You will need them all to be whole.

Back to this misunderstanding of what people perceive as "The One," a lot of people think that their twin soul is "The One." Your twin soul is one of many soul mates that will come into your life and is no more important than the rest, but with the twin soul comes the perfect love and that is what we all strive to find. When we feel that we have close to the perfect love as we could get with our soul mate, but yet think that there's something missing, it's only because people put such high standards to this. There will be no one to fulfill your every needs and that is why your other soul mates are important in your life.

Your fiance is your companion soul mate. He is meant to come into your life for intimacy and/or childbearing and is an important figure in your life. By all means, stay on the path you are intended to follow and keep in mind that these other people with whom you feel strong connections could indeed be other soul mates or they might not, but they are in your life for reasons other than what your fiance has come into your life for.

I "see" this relationship with you and your fiance as becoming a successful one and one in which you will learn many things about life and about yourself. Remember, there are two things you must listen to - your innerself and your heart. They hold the answers. All you have to do is listen. ;o)

If He is My Twin Soul, Will I Regret Leaving?

Q: I believe I have finally found my twin soul, and have been with him for nearly two years. Despite all odds, we have been inseparable, finding it next to impossible to part with each other until now. I have very recently left the relationship (although every cell in my body and soul is screaming not to) because he has an active alcohol addiction and borderline personality disorder. What happens when there are obstacles such as this? If he is my twin soul, will I forever regret leaving? I know he has to work out his own problems, but is there anything I can do to keep the relationship AND my well-being?

A: First of all, my heart goes to you. My twin soul had an addiction, also, so I can relate to your question quite well. In fact, that addiction led to his death, unfortunately. A very sad time for everyone who was part of his life, especially me, his twin soul.

Now, it sounds to me like you made the very choice I did. It’s a hard decision to make but we have to remember we’re number one in our own lives and have to do things that are uncomfortable, but never the less, this has to be done in order for our own well-being. I send you my kudos for this wise choice.

When you meet your twin soul, there are obstacles. If it was easy for everyone to find their twin souls, then everyone would find that person and eliminate all the other soul mates that are supposed to come in their lives for the simple reason that they need them in order to find their higher self. All soul mates are important and none are more important or less important than the other.

These obstacles are tests of spirit. If neither soul mate partners can overcome the obstacles, the relationship will fail. It’s all part of negative karma that one or the other must work out within themselves or they will stagnate in their search for their higher self.

Every living, breathing organism on this earth is on a path which begins with birth and ends with death. However, we all know that death is the end of our physical selves and not our spiritual selves. With each reincarnation, we are put on this earth on a certain path. Negative past life karma stays with you in each reincarnation and follows you until you learn to overcome it. Until your twin soul can overcome his addiction, he will continue down the negative path and he will do one of two things. One, he will get to that point where he reaches out for help, thus knocking down that wall of negative karma and at some other point of time, rejoin you. Or, two, he continues with this negative karma and never reaches higher self, thus traveling through many lifetimes being unhappy and self-destructive. He may find you again, but the same results will occur. It’s a sad process and the only answer to this is for him to get help or he will continue to be in limbo with himself and future relationships.

You will never regret your decision if you realize that it’s your happiness that is most important. I’m very proud of you in your decision. This shows me that you are on the right path towards happiness and total well-being and only positive things will happen to you as long as you remember this and stay on this path. Please, do not stray from this path.

Now, the unfortunate thing about this is, when we are born, we are blessed and yet cursed with a heart. The heart is a powerful organ. Not only is it our breath of life, but it also controls our feelings. Hurting of the heart is the worse pain imaginable, as you know.

What you need to try to do is put up an invisible wall when you feel yourself weakening. Remember, be strong! I know it’s easier said than done, but you have to have the mind and the heart synchronized. Train your mind to control your heart and this will work.

Now, you wanted to know if there was any way that you can keep the relationship and make it work. ONLY if your twin soul seeks help will this work. Any kind of substance abuse is not only unhealthy for the person, but unhealthy for relationships, also. It absolutely will not work unless you close your eyes to the fact, but that only works for some time until the negativity grows from a tiny little rock to a huge mountain that will be so huge, you’ll never get out from under it.

You have to put your foot down and say to yourself that your happiness is the most important thing in the world. That’s the bottom line. You have to tell your twin soul that he needs to get help and that is the only way you will return. If the love is strong enough, he will get help. If he refuses, then that’s your answer.

Can Best Friends Be Soul Mates?

Q: What happens when you meet two soulmates, who just happen to be best friends?

A: Thank you for your question! Your question gets asked quite a bit. In fact, I touched on this one on when I appeared on Single Talk which you can listen to here.

What you are describing is the karmic soul mate bond – two people who are best friends. Keep in mind that this is only one kind of soul mate relationship and is therefore no important nor no less than the other kinds.

A karmic soul mate comes into your life for a reason and that is to teach you something or you teach them. Sometimes the reason is not apparent, but you can’t miss the spiritual attraction which is quite different from the sexual attraction exhibited in the companion soul mate relationship or even the twin soul relationship.

For example, two close friends, a cousin that you are really close to, even that furry companion at your feet can all be karmic soul mates.

The karmic bond is a very special bond which you need to reach your higher self. Martin Schulman once said, “Every time our unconscious is working something out, it calls into our lives the people who have within the pieces of the answer we are seeking.”

Translated, that means the spirit of you is calling the spirit of others to help you with something that you need in order to find your higher self.

So, yes, soul mates can even be best friends.

Do Soul Mates Argue?

I thought I'd found my soulmate, but we disagree about some things. Sometimes we even argue. Does this mean she/he isn't my soulmate?

Yes, we are all human and even soul mates can argue.

This is exactly the point I was making to friend of mine the other day. She was under the impression that soul mates have worked out all the karma and are at that point where there is nothing standing in their way of happiness and total bliss.

This is far from true.

You have to remember that we are not robots and we are still on our life's journey which is going to be filled with not only happiness, but hardships as well.

It is those hardships that test the relationship and sometimes we don't handle it very well and this creates friction within our soul mate - and other - relationships.

The secret is finding a way to express your feelings in a way that does not come over as harmful or vindictive. Listen to your soul mate and instead of becoming defensive, hear what he has to say, and express your feelings towards what he has to say in a calm, collective manner. When you shout at each other and create hurt feelings, that only puts a dagger in the relationship.

When you first feel that tensions are rising, calm yourself and speak. When you do this, this lowers the tension in the room and is addictive. You'll be surprised how you have created a calm atmosphere and your partner will, too.

Working towards solving differences does not mean you have to shout and say things you can never take back. Approach all obstacles as they are meant to be approached. It's obvious there is some karma that has to be worked out. Work on this together. Instead of having a "I'm right, you're wrong" approach, listen to each other. You'll be amazed at how this works so much better than shouting or creating an atmosphere of total chaos.

Can My Sister Be My Twin Soul?

I think I understand a little more about soulmates in general, but I still am quite confused. To me, it's a very complicated phenomenon, sort of like trying to solve what is the meaning of life, or our lives, in this vast universe. I guess maybe that's one of the reasons I find it very interesting. My question is I think I remember you talking about you think there is only one twin soul for a person, why does the twin soul exist, why do we need them, are they usually from the opposite sex or can be the same sex. My sister and I get along so well that sometimes I feel like she can be my twin soul. I want to be with her so much of the time, and I want to do things to take care of her also. Of course, this is definitely not sexual, but it is spiritual I think. Thank you Dorothy for your time. I think I will purchase your book because I have too many questions to ask.

You hit the nail on the head. "Soul mates" is all about solving the meaning of life. Let me explain a little.

I believe that we were all put on this earth for a purpose...sort of like a mission. We have to go through our life here on earth discovering what that mission is and accomplishing it so that we can find our higher self.

Now, I believe there is only one twin soul for each person. That's the Alpha and Omega philosophy. Yin and yang. When we find our twin soul, we are very close to finding our higher self so we are that much closer to accomplishing our mission. Our twin soul will be brought into our lives to finalize that mission.

Take me for example. Before I met my twin soul, I didn't know a thing about soul mates. I had been in one disastrous relationship after another but I know now that the reason for that is because I had not come close to finding myself.

Now, as you know, I'm an author. I live for it. I can go all day on the computer and not have one head-ache and we're talking from morning to night. My twin soul realized my passion. That was one of the qualities that twin souls must have - a compassion for your passions. Or, at least, encouragement.

After he died, one year to the month we met, I had a dream where he came to me and told me to put this book (Romancing the Soul) together. Four years down the road, I'm a syndicated relationship columnist and have an uncanny knowledge of the world of soul mates and I have no idea how I know what I know, but I'm not knocking it.

If I can help others with this newfound gift, then I account that to be my mission. It makes me happy and makes others happy and if I don't do another thing the rest of my life, I know I will have accomplished this much.

Now, your questions.

The twin soul relationship is the ultimate spiritual relationship. It can be with anyone. The human body is but a shell. You are made up of the DNA cells of both your mother and father, but what is inside of you is the real you, the spirit you. There is also the possibility of past life relationships integrated into present life relationships. For example, your sister could have been your husband in another life. I know that sounds silly, but it has been documented to have happened in past life regressions with different people.

There is an interesting story in the twin soul section of my book by Heide Kaminski. She goes on to explain why her daughter is her twin soul. The spiritual connection is strongest in that relationship than any other she has experienced. That's your sign.

I have also found that the sexual relationships fall in the companion soul mate category more so than the twin soul category, so your sister could very well fall into this category.

In my research on soul mates, since the birth of my book, I have unraveled the mysteries of the soul mate connection - why we have them and what purpose they serve in our lives. It's really not difficult once you understand the theory. Very fascinating stuff and worth researching. It's all about explaining the theory of life and your soul mates play a huge part in it.

Can You Find Your Soul Mate Online?

I was wondering if you could give me your opinion about finding your soul mate online. Can you find your soul mate through an online dating service? I have heard some people say you can and some say it's a waste of money. I see ads for online dating sites all the times saying "We can find your soul mate for you!" What's your opinion of this?

My opinion on online dating sites is this. For the soul mate process to work, I feel it has to be a natural process and not one that is "forced." By that I mean when a person resorts to having to pay someone to find their soul mate, the magic is lost and it becomes a mechanical "business-like" process. Not to say there aren't reports of people finding great dates or someone who they click with, but the chances of finding your soul mate (which is a whole different animal altogether) through this means interferes with your cosmic path in life, that is, unless it was meant to happen in the first place. This is why some are successful and some aren't.

Another point I would like to bring up is when someone resorts to an online dating site to find their soul mate, it means that they have given up hope inside themselves that there is someone special out there for them and that is self-degrading. If a person is not happy with life and themselves in general, the soul mate that comes into their life at this time is only doing so for a reason that they are not aware of - perhaps as a rebound to get over the pain of losing a past soul mate or for some other reason these online date-mates are meant to come into their life. If a person is happy within themselves, soul mates will pop up out of nowhere because the love for oneself is contagious. Love yourself and others will love you, too.

Now, this brings me to something else I'd like to address. Looking for a date and looking for a soul mate are two different things. If you're lonely or shy, and are just looking for someone to go out to the movies with or just someone to talk to, then hey that's fine. If you are good with reading between the lines, then online dating sites could be your ticket. But if you're looking for the real McCoy, I'd stick to improving your chances of finding your soul mate by improving your own life first. As I mentioned above, love yourself and others will love you, too.

I also would like to say that you can find love online through other means besides online dating sites but you must use the same principles you apply when looking for love online and be very cautious and careful. I know some instances where people have found a strong attraction to someone they met online which led to marriage and they are still happy and content with one another. I believe these are the ones that were meant to be in the first place. And still others I have heard that have had disastrous results.

Bottom line is this. Become the person someone would want to love and you'll find that soul mate you are looking for - whether it's online, in the workplace, or right under your nose.

Dorothy Dishes on ABC's New Reality Dating Show, "Hooking Up"

Okay. I watched it. It was fun and provided me with some good stuff to write about.

I just love reality shows anyway and "Hooking Up," a new reality dating show on Thursday nights on ABC, caught my eye after an article I read about it in the New York Times. While I'm well aware that most of the stunts they put on are faked for ratings, I still watch them and love them. "Hooking Up" was no exception.

I followed the girls - Amy, Kelly and Maryam (pronounced Myriam..thought that was a neat way to spell it) last night as they met these guys they had found on internet dating sites - which I abhor for reasons that probably no one would understand. I kept an open mind, took notes, and followed the girls as they persued "the one."

From my viewpoint, as someone who knows a little something about finding your soul mates, Amy, 28, is cute but she has a few flaws which are going to prevent her from finding what she believes is the answer to her marriage woes. While these online "hooking up" places can provide her with dates, the only way she's going to find her soul mate - or as she put it "the one" - is to cast off this attitude that she HAS to get married. Her main problem is feeling that at 28, she had better get married in two years tops or she'll be an outcast in her own family forever. Very desperate to find "the one," she is blocking her real soul mates from coming into her life by entertaining these soul mate wannabes. Harsh, and this is only my opinion, but true. I really like Amy. She's bubbly and has great potential. If she wasn't so gun ho on finding "the one," she might even stand a chance of finding happiness if she would not force the issue. As of the end of this episode, she feels like this "David" is "the one," so we'll see how it goes.

Maryam. I like Maryam. She's quirky, and has a great personality. Her flaw? Too emotional. She falls apart when someone dumps her. Not good. She has a lot of issues within herself to solve before she is going to find "the one." Now, she goes out on a date with a 40-year-old named Patrick. She comments that he didn't look a thing like his picture. They showed the pictures side by side and I had to agree that the snapshot made him look like Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise, he isn't. The problem here is that Maryam, and she's so much like the others, goes by appearances. Big no no. Appearances are what your parents gave you, they're your DNA, but they are not the real "you." The real you is what is on the inside. That next guy she dates (forget his name), she admits to his face that he looks gay. He does have gay attributes, but he says that he wouldn't be there with her if he was gay. So, we'll see. She does like him, though, and they're going on another date which I presume will be next Thursday.

Kelly, 35, is a nice-looking blonde, who she believes has found true love in a guy named Sam. Sam is not bad looking either...they really compliment each other. This might be a good love connection, but we'll see. Sam screwed up, though, by saying he was younger than he really was. When he admitted the truth that he was 40, she said, "Well, if you lie about that, what else will you lie about?" A common occurrence when you look for love online. In his words, "People get this stigma when you are of a certain age. I didn't want them to automatically attach me with this stigma." Sort of those words anyway, but Kelly liked his answer. I didn't like the part where he was photographing her washing his Hummer in a bikini. Sort of made me wonder what's he going to do with these pictures. But, she didn't have a problem with it.

I hope I have all those names right, I have a bad memory, but the bottom line was it left me with the feeling that so much centers on physical attributes. In Sam's words, "Women look at pictures first, just like men." So, what he's saying is that the people who are involved with these online dating sites look for physical attributes first and judge from there. Shame.

What is the Number One Question People Want to Know About Soul Mates?

Q: What do most people want to know about soul mates?

A: The number one question most people want to know is who their soul mate is and why they can't seem to find them. Some people have given up hope of finding their soul mates and I find this so disheartening.

It's very easy to figure this out and I'll try to help you understand.

When people approach me with this question, I start out by telling them that no matter how psychic or intelligent the source, the only person who can tell who your soul mate is you. You - and only you - knows who that person is.

Then I tell them that they have many who comes into their lives and if they are in tune to their innerself, they will pick up on the spiritual vibrations from and to this person and that is the only way they can determine who their true soul mates are.

If I had someone come up to me and ask me who their soul mate is, I would ask them three simple questions and come up with three soul mates right off the bat. Sound unbelievable?

Here's a general scenario of how I do this:

Let's say for example someone named Jennifer walks up to me and asks this question. Jennifer is a stay-at-home housewife, married to a man named Bernard. Together they have three children - one who is four, another who is three and the third one who is one.

Jennifer cannot work - nor does she have the energy with three small children and a husband to care for, not to mention the housework and all the other things that comes with being a wife and mother - and even though she loves her family dearly, she can't help the feelings that are overwhelming her for someone she met in early childhood. She and this boy grew up together, attending birthday parties and campouts and, finally, graduated together.

At the time, they were inseparable, but kept the friendship on a platonic level. After graduation, both went their separate ways.

This man whom we shall call Brent met a woman in college and married her. Five years later, they were blessed with two children, who are doing well and thriving.

Both Jennifer and Brent lead happy and fulfilling lives separately, but both keep in contact as they had over the years.

Now that you know the background of this story, let's begin the scenario.

Jennifer's question to me would go like this:

"Dorothy, I love my husband dearly. He treats me well and we basically have a happy marriage, but I feel that there is something missing from my life. Do you think I have a soul mate out there that I haven't met yet?"

I would tell her, "Jennifer, you have to accept the fact that you have many soul mates out there. Your innerself knows who your soul mates are. I will ask you three questions and that will determine whether you have soul mates you aren't aware of and perhaps open up your eyes to ones that are already in your life and you don't realize it. First of all, you say you are married, right?"

"Yes, I have a husband named Bernard to whom I have been married for seven years. I love him more than life itself, but I just don't feel that connection that I've heard a soul mate to be. I could just be tired and overworked and maybe I'm just having the blues right now, but I just feel that there is someone out there waiting for me."

"Jennifer, Bernard is already your companion soul mate. He has come into your life for intimacy and childbearing. Your children were meant to come into your life and Bernard's purpose for entering your life was - among other things - to give you these children."

"Okay, I understand that. But, I still feel like he's not 'the one,' you know?"

"That's because there is no 'the one.' You have many who serves different needs in your life. Bernard is fulfilling a need, just as other soul mates who come into your life."

"Other soul mates? I don't understand."

"Okay, let's find another one for you. Do you have a family member that you are particularly close to?"

Jennifer thinks for a moment and says, "I am fond of an aunt who took care of me as a child when my mother could not. Then, of course, there is a cousin of mine who I was very close to. She would be there for me when no one else would."

"Perfect. Both your aunt and your cousin are your karmic soul mates."

"Karmic soul mates?"

"Sure. Karmic soul mates are friends, co-workers, or even family members who come into your life to help you grow."

"But I always thought that soul mates were romantic."

"Not all of them. Your companion soul mates, yes; your karmic soul mates, no. Your karmic soul mates only come into your life to help you learn a lesson or for you to teach them a lesson."

"I see."

"Jennifer, let me ask you one more question. I know you love your husband, but is there someone in your life - even from your past - that you have some strange spiritual connection with?"

Jennifer thinks for a minute, then her face lights up. "Brent! Of course, Brent! I've always had a special kind of love for him, but nothing on the romantic level."

"Of course not and you want to know why?"

She nods.

"Brent could possibly be your twin soul."

She looks puzzled. "My twin soul?"

"Sure. Your twin soul is your divine counterpart. No one can separate you from your twin soul. You will have many kinds of soul mates come into your life, but the bond with you and your twin soul are inseparable. Time and space will not even separate the two of you because the power of the twin soul bond goes on indefinitely.

"Remember this. A soul mate is anyone who helps you grow spiritually to achieve balance in your life. It could be your husband, your cousin or even someone far away. The number one thing is for you to have balance in your life. Without your soul mates to help you achieve this balance, you will not find your higher self and your higher self is where you are traveling to in this crazy world we call life."

"But, then, could Brent be 'the one'?

"Again, there is no 'the one' out there. It's a common misconception that people idealize their twin soul with being 'the one,' but your twin soul is just another spiritual being that has come into your life to help you with your mission in your life. He is no more or less important than your companion or karmic soul mates. You need all three for balance in order to have a fulfilling and happy life."

So, that's one scenario. I hope this helps anyone who is reading this realize who their soul mates are.

Are All Soul Mates Romantic?

Q: I've read a little about soul mates, and it's my understanding that there does not always have to be a romantic connection. Isn't it correct that our soul mates can play other roles in our lives?

A: Of course not all soul mates have romantic connections, but they do all have spiritual connections. Big difference, although related. That's why they are all grouped under the phrase "soulmates."

The only group of soul mates that rely on romantic levels is the companion soul mates (husbands, wives), and the twin soul can be on the romantic level, but it doesn't have to be.

What you have described is the karmic soulmate - girlfriends (and even boyfriends, co-workers, family members, pets) who have come into your life on spiritual levels. They enter your life for a purpose and that is for you to teach them something they would otherwise not find out in their lives or vice-versa. You need karmic soul mates in your life just as you need your other kinds of soul mates to make you whole.

More Than One Soul Mate?

Q: If you know that you have found your soul mate, but both of you are already in committed relationships when you meet, is there any hope of a future together, short of both spouses dying?

A: Tough call. This sounds to me like the twin soul experience and why I say that is because that’s the number one failure of twin soul relationships—blocks or obstacles— in this case, spouses or girlfriends/boyfriends.

In order for you to be with your twin soul, there are “blocks” put up. These are tests. If it were “easy” to be with your twin soul, everyone would be with their twin soul, and that is what makes the twin soul relationship special and unique. Only the strongest survive.

If the two parties are strong and can overcome the “blocks,” the twin soul union will happen.

With that said, the spouses of the respective parties are brought into their lives for a reason and that is companionship and, perhaps, childbearing. The spouses are their companion soul mates and are just as important. Some people have a hard time breaking out of their mold to be with their twin souls and that is because they have become comfortable, but that “spark” is just not there. That spark lies with their twin souls, only they have a problem.

Should they give up someone who is meant to come into their lives for their twin soul? That can only be answered by the individual.

It is scary sometimes to leave what they have become accustomed and sometimes it’s wiser for them to stay put. However, if they are strong, they can make it happen. But, you have to remember that your life’s destiny was laid out before you were born and if you can’t be with your twin soul in this lifetime, then it’s just not meant to be. Perhaps in the next lifetime, it shall happen.

Why Do We Need A Soul Mate?

Q: Why do we even need a soul mate?

A: I really don't care too much for the word need. Being needy is the worst place to be in order to have a happy, fulfilled life, but for the sake of answering your question, let's explore why we feel we "need" a soul mate.

For some of us, having a mate fulfills that void in our life that otherwise a feeling of loneliness would occupy. Some people are not happy going it alone and that's fine. They find their mate (or one of them...if you've been following, you have many and they all serve different purposes in your life) and go on to live happy and fulfilling lives.

Now, what about those that don't have this need? What about those that aren't having bouts of loneliness but are occupying their lives with their own entertainment? Does that mean they are "different"?

Absolutely not.

But what is happening here and they probably aren't aware of it, is that this is the point where EVERYONE must come to in order for their soul mate to appear!

Doesn't make sense, does it?

It's sort of a catch-22 situation. When you want your soul mate to come into your life is when it's the hardest time for this to happen. Put it out of your head and they come out of the woodwork.

And why is this?

If you are vigilantly trying to find your soul mate, you are blocking the "sensors" that your soul mates use to pick up your spiritual vibrations by setting up a shield in which no soul mate can cross. Let those sensors down, relax and focus on things that make you happy and your soul mate will be knocking on your door.

Remember, it's not much "needing" a soul mate as it is "accepting" him/her when they surface.

Soul Mate Vs. Twin Flame?

Q: What’s the difference between a soul mate and a twin flame?

A: In my teachings, this subject comes up a lot. What's the difference between a soul mate and a twin flame? A lot of people who aren't on the up and up on soul mates think that there is only one out there for them...I'm presuming they are talking about their twin flame, but they use the term, "soul mate."

I try to explain to them that there is no "one" out there for them, but many, many soul mates who come into their lives at one point or another and every one of them serves a person for doing so.

In your life's journey, you have tests and when you complete each "test," that broadens your mind and your intelligence as to what is good for you and what isn't.

I told a client the other day that her abusing husband was one of her soul mates and I thought she was going to punch me in my face. I quickly explained that he served a purpose in coming into her life and that was to learn how to think more highly of herself and not allow this kind of treatment. Until she could get out of this mindset that she was a victim, she would continue this path. And this was one of her tests in life.

Back to twin flames, one of the definitions is that a twin flame is one "kind" of soul mate that is very hard to attain until you have come to that point in your life where you have found yourself. Until you do, your twin flame and you will never be able to have a relationship. I also tell my clients that if everyone could meet and be with their twin flame and it was just that easy, everyone would be with theirs and would miss out on the important tests of life we must have. So, there again, all soul mates are just as important as your twin flame in making you whole.

Q: How long does it take to find out if your mate is your true "soulmate"?

A: One problem with society, IMO, is that they don’t realize that there are more than one soul mates for them and that all come into their lives for different reasons and no one soul mate is more important than the other. What is wrong with this mindset is that they are missing out on a full productive and happy life not accepting these soul mates for the value that they bring into their lives.

Society – in general – feels that they only have one “true” soul mate and they spend the rest of their lives looking that for that single person, when in fact there is no single soul mate out there for them…there are many of them…and like I said before, they are all important towards your own personal life journey.

Twin souls can be a form of having one true soul mate and studies are out whether you can have more than one, but in my opinion, I believe that we all have just one single twin soul that may or may not come into our lives in this realm. A lot of factors have to be taken in consideration such as being at the right place, at the right time, and other extenuating circumstances before you can unite with your twin soul.

Back to your question, how long does it take to find your soul mate? Your soul mate(s) have already come into your life and more are yet to come. Stop and think for a minute of a special person that has made a difference in your life already. That is one of your soul mates.

Soul Mates Later in Life?

Q: Do most people discover their soulmates later in life?

A: That’s an interesting question, Kathy, and easy to explain why it seems as if this is so.

The minute you are born, your soul mates come into your life (your mother is probably your first) and they will continue coming into your life until the day you die (and of course, you will meet again the soul mates that were in your life that have passed when you leave this realm).

However, it’s not until you have fully matured and have “found” yourself do you end up with soul mates that are meant to be in your life as companion soul mates.

Prior to this, you have many, many soul mates coming into your life and serve many purposes for being there, but it is not until you are at that right place within yourself, do you find the soul mates that are meant to come into your life as companion soul mates.

So, this is why you have found your soul mate later in life…you have been through all the experiences that you went through when you were young and now, later in life, you know what you want and that’s when your soul mates DO come into your life. To coin a phrase, you are in “the right place, at the right time.”

Departed Soul Mate

Q: Does everyone have a soul mate? I lost mine in ’82. Will I ever stop thinking about him and form new relationships?

A: Yes, everyone has a soul mate; in fact, you have many soul mates and they enter into your life for different reasons in order to fulfill your life’s destiny.

The soul mate you speak of touched you on a special level and that is why it is hard to stop thinking about him enough to form new relationships. This could very well be your twin soul since it has been very hard for you to go on since his passing. As with any death of a loved one, it will take time before you come to the point where you are ready to have someone else special come into your life. You may feel guilt if you do, and that is natural. If you do feel guilt, perhaps it is time to search inside yourself to determine if you are ready to take on another commitment.

What I would suggest right now is to allow your karmic soul mates to enter your life and have fun for a change. You can’t change the way things are and it’s necessary for your good health to follow other destinies that are mapped out for you. In time, you will heal and that will open the door for your other soul mates to pass through and find you.
